The brightness of this entry hall, designed by Lee Bierly and Christopher Drake, feels like a day in late September. The leaves have only begun to change, and the sun is still shining bright.

Peachy shades of pumpkin set the mood in this cheerful breakfast room.

Smith had the kitchen cabinets painted a warm, mellow shade of yellow while the seating area is in orange, both shades reminiscent of yellow and butternut squash. The neutral wooden chairs and stools blend the breakfast room and the kitchen together.

This living room feels warm and cozy. The vintage carpet is the color of late-autumn maple leaves, orange-red.

Soft golden orange colors to provide romantic ambiance and warmth to this luxurious master bath.

I know that you've seen it hundred's of time in Blog Land but I LOVE LOVE LOVE the look of Batten Board. I had a really boring 1980's ranch living room/dining room combined. Ugly faux paint on the walls, ugly carpeting, ugly everywhere you looked.

New wall paint and MDF put up by my sons and myself.

It was a Saturday project and went really quickly. It is surprising how much light reflection the white brings into the space. I was able to go with a dramatic color on the top; but the rooms still feel bright and light!

(Sorry about the iPhone pictures. My Hubbies had my camera on his bike ride and dropped it on the road. Did I mention that it was my NEW Cannon Camera???)

The Batten Board in the dining room is taller than the Batten Board in the living room.

I wanted there to be flow since the rooms are connected, but I wanted definition between the spaces as well.

The wall paint in the dining room is one shade darker than the living room.

The dining room window was replaced with a large patio door for more light as well as access to the back yard. New hard wood floors installed by my sons.

If you haven't gone into the guest bedroom since you stored last season's clothes, it's time for a quick makeover. Here are room-decorating ideas that will fix any faux pas, just in time for summer visitors.

1. I hate the giant bouquet.

Don't overwhelm a tiny table with a large bouquet. Just a few buds will give guests enough room to place their essentials — and won't bring on an onslaught of allergies.

Guests won't fret about walking around on creaking floors or disturbing you every time they get up if you throw down a plush rug. It also helps to warm up the space.

Here's the secret to a perfectly prepared bed: Start with great cotton sheets, add a cotton coverlet, then finish with a down duvet on top. That combination offers enough flexibility to deal with the most extreme temperature swings. Think a down comforter is pricey? Check Ikea for affordable ones.

4. I can't find a place to charge my phone.

Guests shouldn't have to scramble down on all fours in order to find an outlet. Add a conveniently placed power strip or a docking station.

Foreclosures sell at 30% discount

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Foreclosures accounted for a third of all sales -- and sold at a nearly 30% discount -- during the first three months of 2010.

According to a new report from RealtyTrac, the marketer of foreclosed properties, 31% of all sales were foreclosures. And homebuyers purchasing those properties paid a whopping 27% less, on average, compared to sales of non-distressed homes.

These foreclosure sales include properties sold in short sales or after a bank repossession, known as REOs in industry terms. It does not include transfers from borrowers to banks, as in a sheriff's auction.

REOs, those homes already taken back from borrowers, commanded lower prices than short sales and other pre-foreclosures. The average REO sold for 34% less than conventional sales while pre-foreclosures averaged only 15% less.

Part of the reason for the bigger price cut for REOs is that many of them come to the market in poor condition, their previous owners either unable to or unwilling to maintain them.

Beaten-down condos: 'Deals of lifetime'

Foreclosures have become a dominant feature of many real estate markets, finding willing buyers among young bargain hunters and savvy housing market veterans.

During 2009, more than 1.2 million property sales involved foreclosures. That grew 25% compared with the year before, and 2,500% from 2005.

"That number boggled my mind," said Rick Sharga, a spokesman for RealtyTrac. "A 2,500% increase over a four-year period surprised even us."

Foreclosure sales were highest, expectedly in the bubble states. In Nevada, for example, they represented nearly 64% of transactions. And that's actually an improvement over the 75% of all sales during the first three months of 2009.

Surprisingly, both Massachusetts and Rhode Island had higher incidences of foreclosure sales than did the bubble state of Florida, at 42% vs. 39%.

"Massachusetts and Rhode Island were two of the only Northeastern states that racked up unsustainable price increases during the boom," pointed out Sharga.

Managing foreclosure inventories

Lenders have been trying to manage their inventories of foreclosed homes to prevent them from flooding the market and dragging down prices.

"It will be interesting to watch how they will manage the inventory levels of distressed properties on the market in order to prevent more dramatic price deterioration," said Saccacio.

Sharga said the impact of foreclosure sales on the rest of the homes for sale can be very strong. He cited Nevada, where the price difference between foreclosed properties and conventional sales is very narrow, only 17%.

"That state had such a high incidence of foreclosure sales it managed to depreciate the entire inventory there," he said.

An odorant, called mercaptan, is added to natural gas to make even the smallest leak easy to smell. If you notice the smell of rotten eggs indoors or out, here’s what you need to do:

If you smell gas indoors or outdoors:

* Don't use your telephone or cell phone near the gas leak.

* Leave electrical switches, appliances and computers as they are.

* Don't smoke or use lighters or matches.

* Don't start any motors or motor vehicles near the gas leak area.

* If escaping natural gas is burning, call your local fire department. Don't attempt to put the fire out.

If you smell gas indoors:

* Open doors and windows to let the gas out and fresh air in.

* Go outside. Use your cell phone or a neighbour's phone to call the Gas Distribution Emergency Number, often found on your bill.

* If you can hear a "hissing" sound, leave the building immediately. Leave doors and windows open. As soon as you are well away from the gas leak call the Gas Emergency Number from your cell phone or your neighbour's phone.

If you smell gas outdoors:

* Leave the area. Then immediately call the Gas Emergency Number from your cell phone or neighbour’s phone.

"I wanted something elegant and gorgeous and at the same time rather masculine and raw," says Butler. (Yes that is Gerard Butler's New York Home. It is 3,300-square-foot loft on the edge of Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood.

We love that Butler, who worked with film designer Elvis Restaino on the decor, faced many of the same challenges as the average remodeler. "I knew it was going to take a lot of work to turn the loft into a place where I actually wanted to live," he said. "But I didn't realize it would be four years before I spent the night."

The kitchen’s cabinetry and backsplash were fashioned from leftover flooring materials.

The creativity and ingenuity in blogland never ceases to amaze me.

OurSuburbanCottage didn't like the gold brass 1980's finish on her shower enclosure. (If you've ever priced replacing these, you know it isn't an inexpensive update).

So, with a little SPRAY paint, she has a fabulous updated shower. She did two coats of paint and when she cleans her shower, she uses a soft rag vs. an abrasive pad. Another blogger did the same and said her shower has been painted for over a year and still looks brand new.
I love the thought of re-using and recycling the things that we already have.

I'm trying it on my next Flip! Big THUMBS-UP on this remodeling idea!!!!

Healing Hands for Haiti

Most of the people in the church grounds looked fairly well cared for. We asked if there were any injured who needed treatment. We saw a few lacerations and a facial hematoma but most of the patients at the clinic had flu symptoms or were suffering anxiety due to the quake.Then they brought in a little boy. Oresto Oclor was a 4 yr old whose father had fashioned a device with two sticks and a little wicker and wood child’s chair. He and his sister had carried Oresto down the mountain for the past two days in Cleopatra fashion. He didn’t know where to take Oresto and had been sitting outside the church for an hour or two to rest. Oresto’s face was covered with dirt and dried tears. We unwrapped his blanket and saw that his ear was nearly torn off. He had a large chunk of skin torn out of his forehead and another larger chunk from his under his arm over his ribs. We unwrapped a dirty bandage from his hand and saw that it was dead. The quake had killed Oresto’s mother, and trapped Oresto under some concrete blocks. His father told us that another child who died in the quake was found lying on little Oresto’s hand. His wrist was infected and dying and the bones of his hand were sticking through the skin and had already turned black. Liz our nurse, cradled Oresto in her arms and cried as he screamed in pain while she bandaged his wounds. His forehead was burning and we could tell that he was septic and had bacteria coursing through his blood. This child would die if we didn’t get him immediate treatment. We packed up our clinic in a rush, and explained to Oresto’s father that they both had to come with us right now. Liz wrapped Oresto in a blanket and tried to shield him as best she could from the rough bumps in the road. Oresto was brave but cried out each time the car was jarred.

After what seemed like hours we got to the general hospital. We bypassed triage and were led to the pediatric tent. The Swiss were taking care of the pediatric trauma, and a world renowned pediatric orthopedic surgeon saw Oresto within 10 minutes. I don’t think anyone can save Oresto’s hand, but I think that we saved his life. Oresto’s father doesn’t speak any French and we tried to explain everything that was going on and what to expect. He only had one question. “Please, when the doctors are done, they will give me back my son won’t they?”

So many things combined exactly to get Oresto to us and us to Oresto.

I think that is why I came to Haiti.

My husband and I are always on the look-out for "Real Estate Deals."

After all that has happened in the stock market over the past few years (ie., LOSSES)

The real estate market goes up and down but the house is always there, unlike stock investments.

Trunk Love

Walking through our local thrift store and I spotted this beauty....

I didn't even look at the price....

Just scooped it right up....

Look at the charming old stickers...

England, New York, Mass.,.....

It was marked $4.00.....

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

Here she sits in all of her glory.

As I was loading these pictures onto my blog--- I asked myself---

"What appeals to you about this $4.00 trunk?"

I thought there are several things that I love about this trunk...

1. You can't walk into a furniture store and buy one;

2. There is history, stories, memories and adventures attached to this trunk;

3. I LOVE to travel so this speaks to the adventurer part of my soul;

4. No one else has this trunk---It's unique and special!!!

Isn't that the way we want all of our homes to feel???

Oak and Blah everywhere...

I painted the vanity an espresso (dk.Brown) but it looks black in the photo.

Added a new mirror (TJ Maxx/Home Goods)

New light and faucet

Tiled over the old formica vanity with tumbled marble

Added Rubbed Bronze accessories

Kept the old sink...I'm all about re-using what I can

I still need to paint the bathroom walls

but I need to decide what color

since I'm painting the entire house

(I like to keep the paint all in the same tone)
